CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Alyssa was sitting up in bed, unable to sleep, looking at the phone Conn had given her. She must only use this phone for calls to him or for anything to do with him, he’d said. Did that mean she could use it to call Hayley if it was to do with the job they were doing tomorrow? She didn’t know, but she was getting more and more anxious about what they were about to do. She kept remembering how Finn had said Conn was a drug dealer. What if it was to do with drugs, this job he had for them? She needed to speak to her friend.

She put the phone down and picked up her own mobile.

‘Hello?’ Hayley’s voice was thick with sleep.

‘It’s me. We need to talk.’

‘What about?’

‘Tomorrow. I don’t want to go through with it. I keep remembering what Finn said about the drugs. I don’t want to get involved in that sort of stuff.’

‘Alyssa, we can’t back out now. Conn’ll go mental.’

‘I know. But he can’t force us to do it. I’ll phone him if you like and tell him.’

‘No. We’re getting a hundred quid for this job. Have you ever had as much money as that? Cos I haven’t. Think what we can buy with it.’

‘It won’t be any use to us if we get caught and go to prison.’

‘That ain’t gonna happen.’

‘How do you know? It could.’

‘Conn’s too clever. And anyway, we don’t even know that it is drugs. It could be anything. He didn’t say what it was.’

‘It just feels wrong.’

‘A hundred quid though. We’ve never had that sort of money. Look, do this one job and then if you want to stop afterwards you can. But you know what? I’m not sure I care if it’s drugs or not. If people are stupid enough to want to take them that’s their problem. What chance have we got of making money like that anywhere else? And Conn’s our mate, look how he helped you with Vanessa – he’s important around here and he’ll look out for us.’

‘Yeah, well that’s not what my brother says. He says we should steer clear of him, or we’ll get into big trouble, like he did.’

‘Oh, Lyssa. Please don’t back out now. I’ve never done anything like staying away before and I’d be scared doing it on my own. We’ve always been there for each other, haven’t we? Just do it this one time. Please?’

‘Goldie and your mum will kill us when we get back. They’ll be really worried about where we are. I’ll probably get grounded for a week.’

‘Me too, but it will be worth it for a hundred quid. Just think about that. And we can always text them that we’re okay.’

There was a long silence before finally Alyssa gave a big sigh and spoke. ‘All right, but just this once, and I mean it. Then I’m done.’

‘Yay! We can go shopping at the weekend. What are you going to buy with yours?’

Alyssa tried but couldn’t work up any excitement at the prospect.
